Call for ban on takeaway shops

A COUNCILLOR has called for a ban on takeaway shops near schools in Warrington – to help combat obesity among children.
Coun Linda Dirir (pictured) made the request at a meeting of the borough council.
She referred to a proliferation of takeaway shops in the borough and asked if the development control committee would consider a planning policy to restrict the opening of such shops within 200 metres of schools.
Coun Dirir said: “We should do what we can to remove the temptation.”
Coun Bob Barr, executive member for planning welcomed the question as “extremely positive.”
He said the council would investigate taking action, subject to the restrictions of national legislation.
