Driving rhythms at The Pyramid

THE Warrington-based North Cheshire Wind Orchestra appears at the town centre Pyramid arts centre tonight (Saturday) with a performance of American John Adam’s “Lollapalooza” – a piece of driving rhythms and catchy themes.
The name, signifying any spectacular, bombastic event, is clearly illustrated by its explosions of sound and colour.
“I think the chance for our audience to hear this music is unique and quite a exciting and rare opportunity,” said conductor Catherine Tackley.
The orchestra will also play Buxton Orr’s John Gay Suite, which incorporates melodies from the composer of “The Beggar’s Opera” into a pot-pourri of musical expression.
Paul Vowles performs Ellerby’s Clarinet Concerto, originally written for Ellerby’s wife, Linda Merrick, and drawing on many genres including American minimalism, jazz and British band music.
The sounds of the roaring twenties are represented by Kurt Weill’s Threepenny Opera Suite.
The program ends with Frank Ticheli’s popular Blue Shades.
The concert starts at 7.30pm with a pre-concert talk at 6.30pm.
