ANGRY residents fighting to stop a Titan Prison being built in Warrington will take their campaign to town centre streets tomorrow (Saturday).
Protest group WRAPP – Warrington Residents Against Prison Proposal – will man a street stall dedicated to the issue.Chairman of WRAPP Keith Gleave (pictured) said: “It’s vital that we remind local people how important it is that we keep saying no to a Titan Prison in Warrington.
“There’d be no benefit for Warrington whatsoever in having a Titan Prison here. It won’t cut crime, and the job’s that are being promised are jobs for more experienced people elsewhere in the country – not local beginners as the Government has told us.”
Fears that Warrington could get a Titan Prison have been growing ever since it was learned that the giant Omega site – zoned for a high tech business park – was one of a number of sites in the North West being considered for a prison.
The fact that Justice Secretary Jack Straw has visited the site strengthened the fears.
Mr Gleave said: “Keeping the initial plan for the Omega Business Park would make a lot more sense. It will create 25,000 hi-tech jobs, bring investment into the town and put a positive Warrington – not a ‘Prison Warrington’ – on the map.”
Already WRAPP have made a huge impact, having led a protest march against the plans to influence a council motion opposing the prison. Also, the group has received over 10,000 petition signatures which have since been delivered to Downing Street.
Mr Gleave added, “We look forward to meeting local residents with issues concerning the Titan Prison. In the meantime, for more information on our campaign then please visit www.wrapp.org.uk.”
