Flat wrecked in arson attack

POLICE are seeking witnesses following an arson attack on a first floor flat at Warrington in the early hours of today.
The blaze involved the front door of the property in St Peter’s Way and spread quickly up the stairs.
Fire crews arrived at the scene shortly after 2.30am after being alerted by a neighbour. They found flames half-way up the stairs and smoke pouring into the first floor flat.
It was believed the flat was occupied so firefighters wearing breathing apparatus fought their way through dense smoke to search every room. In fact, the occupier, a 22-year-old woman, was out – as was the occupier of the ground floor flat immediately below.
But damage upstairs was severe.
Occupiers of properties on either side of the fire were evacuated.
The front door was completely destroyed and the hall and stair carpets were damaged beyond repair.
Three fire engines attended the blaze.
Anyone with information that could help the police is asked to call DC Rob McLoughlin on 01244 615859 or the confidential Crimestoppers line 0800 555 111.
