200 fight care home plan

MORE than 200 people have lodged objection to a plan to convert a former church into a residential care home at Warrington.
The plan involves the former Norris Street Methodist Church in Norris Street.
It is the second proposal put forward for the site on the corner of Norris Street and O’Leary Street.
The earlier scheme, which involved a new building next to the church, was withdrawn and the new proposals involve converting the church itself.
Both schemes also involve demolition of the church hall at the rear of the church.
Half of the site is within a high risk flood zone and the other half in a low-to-medium risk area. But the scheme is designed to address these problems.
A number of protected trees would be retained.
Local councillors Kate and Mike Hannon have lodged objections.
They say a proposed extension to the church would have an overbearing impact and would be obtrusive on the street scene. The scheme represents overdevelopment of the site.
There would also be an impact on the local traffic network, causing untold damage to local parking. In addition, there would be increase noise and disturbance.
Residents have written 61 individual letters of objection and 178 people have signed a protest petition.
They fear parking problems, congestion, safety issues for local school children, loss of privacy, noise, disturbance and loss of trees.
The scheme comes before Warrington’s development control committee on Wednesday, March 11.
