RESIDENTS are celebrating after winning a battle to block plans for a waste transfer and recycling facility on a former landfill site near their homes.
More than 60 householders opposed the scheme for New Cut Lane, Woolston – and Warrington’s development control committee threw out the proposals.
It was the third time the plan had come before the committee in 13 months – and the third time it was refused.
Officers have recommended it be approved and an appeal against the decision is likely.
The committee was told the facility would deal only with non-hazardous waste, such as wood, green waste, hardcore, sand, stone, rubble, etc.
It would involve two industrial buildings which, the applicant claimed, would screen recycling activity from nearby home.
But members were told the site was bounded on one side by the rear gardens of houses in Greymist Avenue
About 50 vehicle movements were expected per day, plus about 20 associated with an existing landscaping business.
Objectors feared loss of amenity to residents from noise, dust, fumes, increased traffic movements, ground contamination and importation of waste materials.
Officers argued that the plant would contribute to sustainable waste management.
