Bullying email sent to council

AN email was sent to a parish council by the organisers of the Creamfields pop festival which some councillors felt had a “bullying” tone.
The message was sent in response to an article about last year’s festival in Appleton Parish Council’s newsletter by Coun Sharon Harris.
The council has decided to take no action on the email – but is to join in a special meeting of local parish councils in areas likely to be affected by this summer’s festival.
The meeting will take place on April 16 and will also be attended by representatives of Walton, Daresbury, Hatton, Moore and Sandy Moor parish councils as well as a number of members of Warrington and Halton borough councils.
The aim is to discuss ways to minimise the impact of the two-day August Bank Holiday festival on nearby residents.
Meanwhile, Appleton Parish Council has decided to take no action on an email received from the festival organisers which some councillors felt had a “bullying” tone.
The email sent to Appleton claimed the article written by Coun Harris had contained factual errors. But she told a meeting of the council she had been careful to keep her article factual.
In it, she wrote: “Not only were the residents of Daresbury, Hatton and Walton disturbed, but also people as far afield as Moore, Latchford, areas of Northwich, but more particularly Appleton. Residents in Dudlows Green found the noise and vibration levels intolerable over both days.”
Coun Harris said complaints lines set up by the festival organisers and by the police were answerphones and were at times not commissioned. Local people who had attempted to use them had been unable to get through.
Coun Brian Axcell (pictured) said one Hill Cliffe resident had been unable to get through and was “incandescent with rage.”
Creamfields had said they were trying to minimise disturbance for residents but how they could square that up with doubling the length of the festival was difficult to see.
It was also hard to see why they should pay compensation to parish councils and residents if they did not believe they were causing a nuisance.
