Waste strategy under scrutiny

QUESTIONS about the future of waste disposal in Warrington are to be asked at next week’s meeting of the borough council.
A series of questions have been tabled, touching on the council’s recently approved waste management strategy, the possibility of an incinerator being built in the borough and the likelihood of an extended life for the controversial Arpley

Landfill site.
Coun Bob Timmis is to ask executive member for environment services Alan Litton to respond to suggestions made by a senior manager of the Waste recycling Group, at a recent liaison meeting, that they are planning for a regional waste management facility at Arpley to follow on from the current landfill operation, the licence for which expires in 2013.
Local campaigner John Mulhall has tabled a question about the proposed energy from waste facility – incinerator – included in the council’s waste management strategy.
Mr Mulhall wants to know if the site will have a dual capacity to recycle and incinerate, bearing in mind the collapse of the market for recyclable materials.
He also asks if a new village or housing estate might emerge to use the energy generated by an energy from waste facility.
Another question linked to waste will be asked by Coun Paul Kennedy.
He will ask council leader Ian Marks if he can confirm that the council will not be handing over its refuse collection service to a joint waste authority quango.
The licence for the Arpley Landfill site is due to expire in 2013.
But a few years ago, some industry figures were suggesting that the site could carry on until around 2030.
Nearby residents complain repeatedly at the weight of traffic pounding local roads carrying waste from all over the North West to the site.
