Campaigners sign anti-prison protest

HUNDREDS of petition forms signed by people opposed to any plan to build a Titan prison at Warrington have been handed over to campaigners.
Coun Jo Crotty, Prospective Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for Warrington South, handed the forms to leaders of WRAPP – Warrington Residents Against the Prison Plan.
She was accompanied by local councillors Kevin Reynolds and Trudi Wood.
The residents’ group plan to hand in the petition at 10 Downing Street.
Coun Crotty said: “It’s vital that the Labour Government sees the local residents of Warrington actively opposing the Titan Prison.
“We felt the best way to make our statement was to work closely with residents. By adding our petition signatures to WRAPP’s we can demonstrate how deep the feeling against a Titan Prison in Warrington is.”
The Government has been looking at Warrington’s Omega development site as a potential site to build a controversial super-size Titan Prison – sparking fears among residents that it will tarnish the town and destroy the initial plan for a multi-million £ business park for the site.
WRAPP chairman Keith Gleave said: “The response from local people, as the number of petitions show, has been staggeringly clear. Warrington doesn’t want a Titan Prison. It will ruin the promise 25,000 high-paying jobs for the Omega business park and more importantly – it won’t cut crime.”
Coun Crotty added: “Rest assured that, even after the petitions have been delivered, I along with local councillors and residents will be keeping up the fight to say ‘No to the Titan Prison!’
“It’s never too late to have your say – you can still sign petition at www.jocrotty.org.uk. We will make sure your signature is included with those that go to the Prime Minister.”
