ENGLAND World Cup hero Nobby Stiles was the big attraction at a “Gentlemen’s Evening” organised by the Warrington Group of Masonic Lodges which raised more than £2,000 for charity.
The former Manchester United star did, however, have some competition in winning laughs from the capacity audience from his son, John, who is a top comedian.
More than £2,000 was raised for St Rocco’s Hospice at the event, which is an annual event at Warrington Mason Hall.
Nobby entertained with stories from his years in football as a Manchester United and England half back.
He played nearly 400 games for United, winning League championships and a European Cup. He wore the England shirt 28 times and although he only scored one goal will never be forgotten as a member of the 1966 team which won the World Cup.
During the evening a Jamie Carragher signed shirt went up for auction and went under the hammer for £220, while a signed photograph of Manchester City’s Shaun Wright Phillips was sold for £120. A signed Everton football fetched £100.
Organiser Vic Charlesworth said: “It was a brilliant atmosphere from the word go. Nobby and his son make an excellent team. Nobby is a super after-dinner speaker while John Stiles is a first class comedian.”
The night was so good that more than 50 people ordered tickets for next year’s dinner without even knowing who the guest speaker or comedian will be.
