Warrington Town Res 7 Denton Town 0
WARRINGTON Town’s second string featured a number of new starters but right from the off it became evident they had the measure of the visitors for pace, movement and passing ability.
That said Denton should be credited for never giving up and over the course of 90 minutes made a number of chances of their own.
Town went close to opening the scoring within two minutes when Dave Berry’s shot struck the base of the post. Zak Aley went close with a couple of chances before Berry made amends for his earlier miss by firing past the ‘keeper having been put through one on one.
Connor Millington pulled a cross coner shot just beyond the far post but with Denton failing to clear their lines the return shot struck the woodwork again. It was wave after wave of Town attack by now and Aley and Millington both went close before Aley scored the second, beating defenders and the keeper.
Within a couple of minutes it was 3-0 when John Hedges shot into an empty net after Aley had drawn out ‘keeper and defender.
Francis Smith forced a fine save following an impressive array of passes before Denton enjoyed their best spell of the game. They headed just wide from a corner and forced a double save from Dave Shaw, in between Dave Berry forcing a save from Denton’s keeper.
The second half saw both sides trade long range shots and then Hedges coolly chipped the defender to make a great opening but his shot went straight at the ‘keeper. Aley made it four when he picked the ball up wide right, cut inside the last defender and shot past the ‘keeper from close range. Town then had a let off when a poor clearance went straight to a Denton attacker who shot wide. Aley then headed just over before Hedges showed some neat footwork to fire home off the inside of the right hand post.
Town continued to press and made it six and a hat-trick for Hedges when a ball over the top left the defence flat-footed and John lifted it over the advancing ‘keeper and into the net. The scoring was rounded off when Dave Berry picked up a back pass to turn and slot home.
Denton never gave up and fired a shot just over in stoppage time.
Town: Shaw, Riley, Hardwick, Snowden, Sinker, O’Donnell, Millington, Berry, Aley, Hedges, Smith. Subs: Brown, Gore, O Ellis, Parr, Hunter.
