ANGRY residents at Warrington are fighting plans for a 39-bed nursing home which would involve the loss of “green” land and the demolition of a church hall.
The proposals, submitted by a London doctor, involve land bounded by Norris Street, O’Leary Street and Venns Road.
Residents are campaigning for the scheme to be refused planning consent and have won the backing of Fairfield and Howley councillors Paul Kenny and Yvonne Fovargue and Orford councillors Mike and Kate Hannon.
Coun Kenny (pictured) said: “This is simply an unacceptable development in a residential area which already suffers from traffic congestion and parking problems.
“The scale of the development is of concern given the size of the land and the quality of life of nearby residents will be compromised.
“The main access is totally inappropriate given the residential nature of Venns Rd which is serviced by a minor estate road.”
Local resident Bernie McDerra said: “On a daily basis we suffer from traffic congestion, noise and pollution and this development will add to that. Parking is a daily problem for all local residents.
“The area just cannot cope with a development of this nature which will require 24 hour access for large as well as smaller vehicles. Residents’ lives will be blighted and it’s a price we are not prepared to pay.”
The site contains two mature trees protected by a Tree Preservation Order which could be harmed if the development went ahead.
