AN investigation is being held into the death of a Warrington woman shortly after being detained by police.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission has decided to manage an investigation into how police dealt with the incident
Janet Jackson, 47, was detained by two officers after complaints had been received alleging she was creating a nuisance outside a house in the Orford area in the early hours of Sunday, February 2. She was later found to be unconscious and was taken to Warrington Hospital where she was found to be dead.
In a statement today, the IPCC said Cheshire Police had received seven calls – two of which were 999 calls – between 12:44am and 2:39am complaining about the Ms Jackson’s behaviour. It was alleged that she was creating a nuisance outside a house in the Orford area.
A male officer attended the incident at approximately 3am and he was joined by a female officer at approximately 3:30am, at which point Ms Jackson was detained. As she was being transferred to a police car it was noted that Ms Jackson was unconscious. First aid was administered by the officers and an ambulance was called. Ms Jackson was pronounced dead at Warrington District General Hospital at approximately 5:45am.
The IPCC has assessed the available information and decided to manage the Cheshire Constabulary investigation at this stage.
Naseem Malik, IPCC Commissioner for the North West, said: “The investigation will look at all aspects of this incident, including the response to the telephone calls about Ms Jackson’s behaviour. However it is worth noting that our initial assessment has shown that there was nothing in the telephone calls to police to suggest that she was in any danger. At this stage, the primary focus of the investigation will be whether anything could or should have been done differently once the first officer arrived on the scene.”
