Unlucky Town

TOWN travelled to Woodley Sports and suffered possibly their cruellest defeat of the season, going down 1-0 despite out playing their hosts on an unfamiliar plastic surface.
Warrington started brightly, pushing their opponents back, the first chance of the game falling to striker Chris Amadi, whose angled shot went narrowly across the face of the goal. The home side worked their way into the game, and forced the recalled Richie Mottram into a good low save. Captain Anthony Kielty, was next to go close for Town, seeing his header go over the crossbar. Once more Mottram was called into action to deny the home side and good defending kept the score goalless at half time.
The second half began quickly too, both sides pushing forward but being denied by excellent defending, none more so than when Peter Moore cleared a goalbound Woodley effort off the line.
Town started to get on top and Phil Howard was unlucky not to put them ahead when he latched onto an Amadi flick on, to see his shot cannon behind off the top of the bar. Mottram was soon back in action though, this time to deny Woodley striker Danny Queeley, with a flying save. Town went closest to opening the scoring in the 71st minute, when Moore latched onto a poor clearance to lob the stranded keeper from 40 yards, only to see his effort rebound back to the keeper off the post.
The home side took the lead, controversially, against the run of play after the referee changed his mind and awarded the home side a corner which was not cleared properly and home defender Matt Cotton toe poked home from 12 yards. Warrington pushed forward looking for an equaliser which ultimately never came.
Town must now lick their wounds and prepare for Saturday’s clash away at Curzon Ashton which is to be screened by Channel M.
