Two plays for the price of one

A COMEDY which must be in the running for having the longest play title in the world is to be staged by the Bridgewater Players at Thelwall Parish Hall.
“The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society Murder Mystery”, by David McGillivray and Walter Zerlin Jnr., is in fact a play within a play.
It tells how the ladies of the Townswomen’s Guild attempt to stage a whodunit entitled “Murder at Checkmate Manor” despite the fact that they have only five members to take 14 parts.
As might be expected, things do not go smoothly with the scenery collapsing, sound effects going wrong, cues being missed and quick changes being rather too slow. But the ladies soldier on bravely, revealing rather more about the relationships between each other than they do about the plot.
The production will be staged February 19-21 at 7.45pm
Originally performed at the Edinburgh Festival, the play has over the years been performed in several different versions, the authors having written a number of different “plays within the play” and on one occasion using “Hamlet”!
Pictured in rehearsal are Beryl Gadd, June Brogdale and Lindsay Wroe.
