Police dispel speeding traffic myth

POLICE have dispelled the myth that speeding traffic is endangering the lives of pupils at Stockton Heath Primary School by exceeding the 30 mph limit.
Checks carried out by a Police Community Support Officer over 11-and-a-half hours showed that drivers were not exceeding the limit.
The checks were mounted following complaints from residents and the parish council that cars were regularly exceeding the limit in West Avenue.
Residents were concerned that accidents could occur as children went to and from the school. They asked for 20 mph speed limits and traffic calming measures to be introduced.
But the borough council turned down the request as it was “not a high enough priority.”
PCSO Peter Crellin had carried out speed watch checks for 11.5 hours over several weeks. He said more than 1,600 vehicles passed and none were speeding.
The top recorded speed was 31 mph on a Saturday afternoon.
