Soulers on song for care home

A GROUP of traditional dancers and singers raised £900 for the residents’ fund at a local care home as a result of a tour taking in much of the South Warrington area.
The Warburton Soulers came up trumps for Cotebrook Home at Lymm by donating the money.
Money was collected by the soulers who performed their traditional “Souling play” in pubs around the area.
The proceeds will go towards purchasing much needed equipment and comforts for the residents.
Warburton Soulers are believed to have performed a “Souling Play” in the Warburton area as early as the mid-18th century.
The custom died out around 1936 but fortunately the play had been written down for posterity and was revived in 1978.
Today, the group go on an annual tour of pubs and other venues around Warburton, Lymm, etc., in early November, starting and finishing at the Saracen’s Head in Warburton – their traditional home.
Picture shows “souler” Lawrence Armstrong with resident Mrs Gertrude Bull and Janet Caldcleugh, senior care manager.
