Youngsters shown the way ahead

YOUNG people in Warrington are “way ahead” of the crowd in construction training.
A group of year 10 and 11s from local schools is involved in the borough council’s Wayahead project, which provides learning and training opportunities for young people aged 14-19.
In partnership with the Fullagar Construction Skills Centre in St Helens, the group has been learning skills including brickwork, plastering, painting and decorating, joinery, floor and wall tiling and plumbing.
Last year a group of year 10s achieved six distinctions and six credit passes for a Construction Awards Alliance (CAA) Foundation Craft Award and six City and Guilds passes in brickwork.
This year the Fullagar Centre will be offering evening classes for learners who want to gain new skills, update their existing ones or even change career paths.
The council’s Wayahead initiative is a joint project with Cheshire County Council, Connexions and the LSC. It provides an online prospectus of courses and training opportunities for young people aged 14-19 and also provides information on funding, transport and careers advice.
