Don't let burglars see in New Year

POLICE at Warrington are reminding residents that burglars don’t regard New Year’s Eve as a holiday.
It’s the one night of the year when the majority of people are out celebrating – and burglars know this well
So partygoers should do all they can to reduce the risk of their home becoming a target.
Chief Inspector Nick Bailey said: “New Year’s Eve isn’t a holiday for burglars – it is the perfect time to carry out crime. It is that time of year when the majority of houses will be empty as people are out celebrating and residents should do all they can to deter the opportunist thief.
“We would encourage residents to assess their current security measures at home – don’t make the New Year a happy one for thieves.”
There are a number of steps householders can take to make sure their home looks “lived in.”
They should consider buying timer switches and use them on lights and radios to give the impression that someone is at home.
Window and door locks should be fitted and also a spy hole on the front door so callers can be seen before the door is opened.
Car keys, handbags and wallets should not be left where they can be seen.
Another measure is to have valuable items security marked with house numbers and postcodes.
Similarly, valuable items such as sat navs, stereos and laptops should not be left on view in cars and all sheds, garages andout buildings should be securely locked.
Chief Inspector Bailey added: “Residents should be on their guard and should report any suspicious activity in their area to the police. Support us working over Christmas and New Year by helping us to make the festive season safer for all.”
