Early morning in a mystic woodland

0

SHAFTS of early morning sunlight cut through the mist on this flooded quarry at Helsdale Wood, Lymm.
An attractive if foreboding scene – but one which belies the danger of the place.
Not only does the flooded quarry pose a drowning threat for the unwary, but it also spelt disaster for local residents.
Some years ago, torrential rain caused the pit to overflow the ancient quarry and pour into a nearby stream which, in turn, became a torrent pouring downhill towards the Bridgewater Canal under bridge at the junctions of Burford Lane, Warrington Lane and Mill Lane.
Roads were flooded and a cottage – appropriately named Caution Cottage – was inundated.
Since then, work has been carried out to prevent a recurrence of the problem.
But the old quarry – alongside a well-used woodland footpath – still presents an ominous presence in the spooky wood.
