Shoppers given a festive warning

SHOPPERS in Warrington are being given a festive warning – to ensure they do not fall foul of opportunist thieves.
Officers from Warrington West Neighbourhood Policing Unit are urging those who visit Gemini Retail Park in the run-up to Christmas to follow some festive crime reduction advice.
They are warning shoppers that they are not the only ones who will be out and about during the festive season – so too will thieves who will have their own Christmas “wish list”.
Police Community Support Officer Neil Samuel said: “It is that time of year when shoppers are often distracted – and weighed down with numerous bags of presents – while they are out and about buying gifts.
“People need to be on their guard and we would urge everyone to ensure they keep a close eye on their belongings at all times.”
Thieves have been known to target shoppers who have left their handbags open and shopping bags unattended and drivers who have left presents on display in their cars.
Officers across Warrington are carrying out high-visibility patrols on foot and by car in the main shopping areas.
Police are focusing patrols around Gemini Retail Park, which is traditionally very busy with shoppers throughout the festive period.
PCSO Samuel added: “We will be carrying out high-visibility patrols in the area to support local business and to reassure members of the public that we will not tolerate potential thieves.
“They can rest assured that we will take positive action where necessary and will do all we can to ensure the festive shopping period is a pleasant experience for everyone.
“We also hope this sends out a strong message to any potential thief that if they choose to target Warrington over the festive period then they will be caught and punished.”
A mobile CCTV unit is being used in the area and shoppers are being urged to be aware of their surroundings and to report any suspicious activity to police. Shoppers are also being warned to be careful when withdrawing money from outdoor cash machines and to ensure they protect their PIN number at all times.
