WARRINGTON South MP Helen Southworth played host to more than 200 children with diabetes who visited Parliament to lobby MPs for improved support for youngsters with the condition.
As secretary of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Diabetes, Mrs Southworth has been working in Parliament to get action to help children with diabetes. Already, more than 150 MPs have supported her Early Day Motion calling for support in schools for pupils with diabetes to be improved.
She asked the Prime Minister for action at Prime Minister’s questions last week and a working group has been set up to look at the issue. The Prime Minister said the Government is committed to improving the quality of diabetes care.
Mrs Southworth said: “It is vital that children in Warrington and throughout the country receive the support they need at school so that they do not lose out on lessons, school trips and activities. We have to make sure that pupils are properly supported by their schools”.
A spokesman for Diabetes UK said: “Diabetes is a serious condition that, if not managed effectively, can lead to long-term complications such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure and amputation.
” Short-term complications of the condition include hypoglycaemic episodes, known as ‘hypos’, can lead to unconsciousness and hospitalisation if left untreated”.
