Police are still investigating the incident and the man has been freed on bail pending the outcome of their enquiries.
A woman, aged 35, is in Warrington Hospital after apparently having recently given birth.
A post mortem examination has been ordered and will be carried out by a Home Office pathologist either later today or tomorrow.
Police said today that the woman was admitted to hospital on Tuesday.
She was suffering abdominal pains and showed signs of having suffered a significant loss of blood.
Doctors, after carrying out test, came to the conclusion she had recently given birth.
Police enquiries led to an address in the Orford area of Warrington where the body of a baby girl was discovered.
The 56-year-old was subsequently arrested and questioned.
A police spokesman said police and medical enquiries were continuing.
No details have been given of the identity of the man or the woman, nor the address where the baby was found.
