Top housing group wins another year

THE highly successful organisation which has managed Warrington’s 9,000-plus council homes for the last four years will carry on the work for an extra year – regardless of the outcome of a review of future options for housing in the borough.
Town Hall chiefs have decided to extend the management agreement between the borough council and Golden Gates Housing (GGH) until February 2010
The agreement was due to expire next February and if it had not been extended GGH would have been unable to carry on functioning.
GGH is an Arms Length Management Organisation and was set up in 2004 as a vehicle to achieve the decent homes standard. The group was awarded Two Star status by the Government which released £30.2 million and resulted in a £65 million programme to deliver the decent homes standard.
This was completed in March this year, with all the council’s housing stock brought up to standard with the exception of properties where the tenants refused to have the work done – two years ahead of the Government’s target.
Council officers are now carrying out a housing options appraisal to recommend how housing will be managed in the borough in future.
Coun Bob Barr, executive member for planning and housing said: “Golden Gates has been managing our housing extraordinarily well.
“We need to extend the management agreement while the housing options appraisal is completed. It may be terminated early but it is more likely to be extended a few more months, whatever the recommendations of the appraisal.”
