Public meeting over binge drinking

RESIDENTS worried about late night drinking in a busy village are being invited to a special meeting tonight (Thursday).
Stockton Heath Parish Council is concerned about the impact of the burgeoning “night time economy” since developments around Victoria Square opened.
Members’ concern was heightened by a recent application by the Viper Lounge to extend opening times to 3.30am each day.
Following objections to the licensing committee the application was turned down. But during discussions it was felt that a residents’ meeting should be held to discuss problems caused by late night revellers.
The meeting, which anyone can attend, is at the Sandy Lane Centre from 6.30pm. Letters about the meeting have been posted to those living nearby.
At a meeting of the parish council resident Patrick Mullee told members of two incidents at a village store where youths had walked in and taken alcohol without paying for it.
He said the shop displayed special alcohol offers near the door.
“I saw a man walk in towards the alcohol display, take some and walk out. No-one batted an eyelid – there was no-one covering the door.
“In the second incident, my wife saw a gang of lads outside the shop. Two walked in, took a carton of lager and they went off on their bikes,” he said.
Mr Mullee he spoke to the shop manager, who had been told by head office to display alcohol offers by the door.
“He really didn’t want to know about my complaints.”
Coun Maurice Leslie suggested Mr Mullee raise the issue at tonight’s meeting.
