ALL three political parties on Warrington Borough Council have backed a move to open the way for new measures to promote thriving, sustainable local communities
A motion put to the council by leader Ian Marks and deputy leader Keith Bland urged members to grasp the opportunities becoming available to local authorities under the Sustainable Communities Act.
The Act, which has cross-party support nationally, aims to promote the sustainability of local communities.
It is designed to allow local authorities and their communities to drive forward the help that central government gives to reverse community decline and promote thriving, sustainable communities.
The Act gives councils the power to make proposals to government on the action and assistance government must take or give to promote sustainable communities and to argue for a transfer of public money and function from central to local control and for including citizens in democracy.
When invited, the council will be able to use the Act by preparing and submitting proposals on how central government can help.
