Lamp post phone mast rejected

COUNCILLORS have rejected proposals for a “lamp-post style” mobile phone mast – because it would be nearly three times thicker than a lamp-post.
Warrington’s development control committee refused permission for telecommunications giant Telefonica O2 to erect the 12.5m high mast in Warrington Road, Penketh.
The decision represented a victory for local councillor Fiona Bruce (pictured) who spoke against the proposal and told the committee it was the fifth time she had opposed a phone mast application and she hoped it would be the first she would win.
Residents opposing the scheme argued that the mast would be only 60 ft from a children’s playground.
They were concerned about health issues, because of the proximity of the playground and a bus stop.
But the committee was told they could not refuse the application on health grounds because it conformed to international guidelines.
Coun Bruce said the mast would be in an inappropriate location, close to community facilities and an undesirable addition to the street scene.
Penketh Parish Council and 13 nearby residents also objected to the application.
