Wear your poppy with pride says Mayor

WARRINGTON’S Mayor, Coun Graham Welborn, is urging residents to join him in supporting the Royal British Legion’s two week Poppy Appeal.
He is hoping the young and the old across the borough will wear their poppies with pride
The Royal British Legion is the UK’s leading charity providing financial and emotional support to millions of people who have served and are currently serving in the Armed Forces, and their families.
Remembrance is at the heart of the Legion’s activities. Last year’s appeal raised almost £30 million – an increase of more than 15 per cent on the 2006 total of £26 million.
The 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War and the 25th anniversary of The Falklands War will form part of this year’s Remembrance services.
Coun Welborn (pictured) said: “The appeal and remembrance is not just about historical wars, it is important to families who have lost a loved one in today’s conflicts. By supporting the appeal and wearing your poppy with pride, you are making a huge difference to lives affected by war.”

The Mayor will lead this year’s service at the war memorial, Bridge Foot, on Sunday (November 9)in memory of all those who have given their lives through conflict.
He will be joined by service units and voluntary groups, accompanied by the Salvation Army band, for the traditional service shortly before 11am.
Members of the public are welcome to attend and are asked to gather at the war memorial no later than 10.45am. Those wishing to place wreaths are requested to do so by this time.
Motorists are warned that lane closures will lead to traffic hold-ups in the area.
