Fire crews tackle 10th floor blaze

FIRE crews tackled a blaze in a 10th floor flat at Warrington – in the belief someone could be trapped in the smoke-filled property.
It soon became apparent the flat at Peninsula House, Orford was empty – but for a time firefighters were in the situation of having to place themselves at risk.
A spokesman said: “It takes a long time to reach a fire at that height – there is a special high rise procedure.
“Fire safety is even more important in a high rise property.”
Neighbours had raised the alarm and four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus forced their way into the flat to find the blaze involved an unattended grill pan on the cooker.
The occupant had gone out, forgetting the cooker was switched on.
The spokesman added: “We used a small amount of water to put the fire out and then ventilated the flat.
“When a fire is at this height, firefighters have to put themselves at much more risk than in a normal two-storey house.”
