How government can help the town

WARRINGTON Borough Council aims to put forward proposals on how central government can help the town promote thriving, sustainable communities.
A motion will be put to the council tonight (Monday) urging members to grasp the opportunities becoming available to local authorities under the Sustainable Communities Act.
It will be put forward by council leader Ian Marks and seconded by his deputy, Keith Bland.
The Act, which has cross-party support, aims to promote the sustainability of local communities.
Coun Marks and Coun Bland will ask the council to support processes in the Act designed to allow local authorities and their communities to drive forward the help that central government gives to reverse community decline and promote thriving, sustainable communities.
The Act gives councils the power to make proposals to government on the action and assistance government must take or give to promote sustainable communities and to argue for a transfer of public money and function from central to local control and for including citizens in democracy.
When invited, the council will be able to use the Act by preparing and submitting proposals on how central government can help.
