Residents fight phone mast plan

ANGRY residents are fighting plans for a mobile ‘phone mast designed to resemble a street lamp only 60 feet from a children’s playground.
People living near the site in Warrington Road, Penketh have lodged objections on health grounds and because of the “unsightly appearance” of the 40 feet high mast.
Objections have also been lodged by Penketh Parish Council and local borough councillor Fiona Bruce.
The application has been made by Telefonica O2 UK Ltd who say the area does not receive sufficient coverage to provide an adequate level of service to allow indoor use of mobile phones.
They say they have considered five alternative sites but that this one – on the northern highway verge of the A562 Warrington Road close to the junction with Greystone Road – is the most appropriate.
The parish council express concern about the impact on health, particularly because of the proximity of the children’s play ground and a bus stop.
They say the mast will be out of character with existing street furniture and will be seen from nearby houses. It would also obstruct the footpath and encroach on Greystone Recreation Ground – land owned by the people of Penketh.
Coun Bruce says it is an inappropriate location, close to community facilities and an undesirable addition to the street scene.
Residents express alarm over health issues and unsightly appearance of the mast and claim there is no need for additional masts in the area.
They also fear interference with television reception.
