Cycling through Cuba for charity

A WARRINGTON woman is training hard for a 230-mile cycle ride through the mountains and rural villages of Cuba.
Joan Rushton, 61, of Whittle Hall, hopes to raise £3,000 for Professor Robert Winston’s charity Women for Women – which raises funds for research into women’s health problems including cancers, pregnancy and childbirth.
So far she has raised more than £1,200 for the charity and hopes to raise the remainder before the trip on March 13.
She is also helping to organise two events for the charity. This Sunday (November 2) there is a Mind Body and Soul Festival at the Fir Grove, Grappenhall.
A Wine Tasting, tickets available from Joan, is being held on November 29 at The Oaks Centre, Stocks Lane, Penketh.
Joan, who is a court clerk at Liverpool, is attracted to the charity because one of her daughters, Deborah, who now lives in Turin, Italy, suffers from ill health and has recently had a baby. Her other daughter is also pregnant , and Joan’s mum died from breast cancer.
Joan has always enjoyed cycling and has recently been on a training course in the Cotswolds to prepare for the event – cycling 40 miles a day. She is also increasing her visits to the gym and swimming regularly to prepare for the trip.
“I am really looking forward to taking part in the event and am working hard to raise funds for the charity. It will be interesting to see the mountains and rural villages of Cuba,” she said.
Anyone interested in helping the fund raising should contact Joan on 01925 710839 or visit her website www.justgiving.com/ joanrushton.
