THE first task for the newly-formed Friends of Culcheth Linear Park will be to try and solve the worsening flooding problems which make parts of the park unusable at times.
Sally Probert, chairman of the group, made this pledge after the inaugural meeting, attended by 40 people.
She said: “More water seems to be coming into the park from adjoining farm land.
“The problem has got worse in the last 12 months and it will be our first job to try and solve it.”
The new group claims to represent 500 people and has elected a 10-strong committee..
They have launched a website, www.thefriendsofculchethlinearpark.co.uk which is already attracting visitors from all over the world.
Sally said: “We don’t want to see the park developed particularly – we want to keep it natural.
“But we would like to have a park ranger. The park was in much better condition when we had one.”
Coun Paul Campbell told Culcheth and Glazebury Parish Council he had attended the Friends’ inaugural meeting and had been impressed with the initiative shown by members.
“I think it will be a credit to the village,” he said.
Coun Keith Bland – deputy leader of Warrington Borough Council – said: “We are hoping to be able to provide a ranger next year – but probably only a part-time ranger.”
