Motorists warned over winter perils

POLICE are advising Warrington motorists to ensure their cars are ready to face the ice, fog and snow, as winter approaches.
Car owners are being urged to give their vehicles a thorough check during the next few weeks to ensure they are fit for driving.
Traffic Sergeant Neil Farnworth, said: “The clocks are due to go back this month and it is

traditionally at this time of year that we see a rise in the number of collisions on the roads.”
He said drivers should ensure they are prepared for driving to and from work in the dark and that cars have been checked, including the service history.
“Drivers need to be prepared for all types of weather in the Warrington area. Although we all know the weather can start to change significantly at this time of year it always seems to come as a surprise to some drivers with many being caught out by fog, ice and snow as they embark on their normal day-to-day journeys,” he said.
Sgt Farnworth said drivers should ensure that lights and brakes are working properly, and check tyre pressure, coolant and oil levels.
Drivers should keep the windscreen washer topped up and ensure that the windscreen is clear before setting off on a journey. They should allow plenty of time to de-ice the car thoroughly. He said scraping just a few inches of frost away in front of the driver’s eyes is illegal and dangerous.
Drivers are also advised to use fog lights if conditions are bad, to take care at junctions, and ensure they have adequate breakdown cover.
