A £14 million project to help prevent flooding of homes at Warrington has been welcomed by a local MP.
The work will see improvements being made to existing sewers and pumping stations, and the construction of new sewers and tanks to store storm water.
Warrington South MP Helen Southworth has welcomed a legally enforceable agreement by
United Utilities to tackle the problems of flooding in parts of Penketh, Great Sankey and Whittle Hall.
It follows her campaign with local residents to address long-term flooding problems in the town. For many years residents in the three areas have suffered because of severe problems with sewers and surface water drainage.
Now following an agreement between the company and Ofwat, work will start next month to reduce the risk of future flooding. The project should be completed by 2011.
Mrs Southworth said: “I am determined to ensure that every one of my constituents who has suffered regular flooding in their homes and gardens in recent years gets the action they deserve to tackle this problem head-on.
“I will be holding regular meetings with Ofwat and United Utilities to make sure the promised actions are carried out. No-one should have to put up with flooding like this, and it has to be sorted as quickly as possible.”
United Utilities have agreed to meet residents and the MP regularly during the period of the work to ensure satisfactory progress.
