PLANNING chiefs have given the go-ahead for a development of seven houses – all for social rent – on the site of the former Mee Brow Community Centre.
A number of local residents opposed the scheme and planners expressed some concern at the potential loss of existing trees.
But overall they decided the need for affordable housing outweighed the loss of trees.
The community centre was demolished some time ago.
Seven houses – two pairs of semis and a terrace of three – will be built on the site on Warrington Road, but access will be from Churchill Avenue. Fourteen car parking space will be provided.
Planners say visual impact on the openness of green belt will be very limited.
Trees likely to be affected by the development are said to be attractive, but no worthy of tree protection orders.
Culcheth and Glazebury Parish Council did not object to the scheme but expressed concern over proposed siting of rubbish and re-cycling bins. They also feared a proposed ginnel would be a source of vandalism, littering and burglary.
Members of the borough’s development control approved the scheme after hearing the applicant would retain existing trees where possible.
