THE 5ft bird which caused something of a flap at Culcheth, near Warrington has finally been caught.
Police have revealed that the bird – a rhea, or American ostrich – was caught by its owner in a field near his home in Holcroft Lane, Culcheth.
The bird, which has white feathers and “big claws” according to the police description, escaped during the night and a warning was issued to members of the public to keep away from it should they chance upon it.
Then police reported the bird had been recaptured – only to then admit they had been wrong and it was still on the loose.
Eventually, however, the all clear was given after the owner recovered the giant bird, safe and well, from a field where it had been wandering happily around.
