TOWN Hall chiefs, meeting behind closed doors, have agreed to sell one of Warrington town centre’s most attractive historic buildings for an undisclosed price.
The former borough treasurer’s department building in Palmyra Square South has been on the market for several years.
Now members of the borough council’s executive board have approved the disposal of the building, authorised the council solicitor to enter into necessary documentation and delegated power to the strategic director corporate services to dispose of the property on the most favourable terms available.
Reasons given are to enable disposal of the building “in a timely manner” and to generate income for the council’s capital programme.
A report considered in private by the board indicated that a decision on the appropriate means of disposing of the building was required and could not be deferred without risking losing a potential buyer.
Although used latterly as the headquarters for the borough’s finance department, the Grade 2 Listed building was original built as Warrington’s technical school.
It has been standing empty for some time.
