Students fly the flag for local poets

TWO of Warrington’s leading English Literature students who will head off to University this autumn are celebrating the news they have scooped national awards in the Away with Words competition run by the Young Writers organisation.
Priestley College students Peter Jarvis who landed three straight A grades at A-Level this summer and classmate Amy Davies, who notched two B grades and a C, were two of only five students selected from the entire North West of England region.
The talented duo certainly flew the flag for literary talent in Warrington with the other successful students coming from
Windermere, Lancaster and Salford respectively, which showed the diverse range of entrants to the competition.
Peter is now destined for the University of London to read History and International Relations whilst Amy will continue her studies in Archaeology at the University of York.
He said “I was pretty pleased to hear that I’d won with my poem, it was just something I made up on the spur of the moment. It’s quite amusing to have it published really; it got me a few chances to say – I’m a poet, and I did not know it for real, before everyone understood what I was talking about.”
Amy meanwhile was similarly enthused about her success, “It’s nice being noted as a published author because you feel your talent has been recognised even if it’s only on a small scale which encourages you to write more.”
Both students received gift vouchers following their success and had their work published in the book – Away With Words From North West England.
