From Hendrix to exploding custard!

Daresbury Laboratory in Warrington has announced a new calendar of public evening lectures and schools events with a wide range of interests from rock legend Jimi Hendrix to exploding custard!
The lectures explore the possibility of time travel, human face recognition technology, the mathematics of juggling or black holes and the stars, through a range of entertaining and interactive talks.
The new programme of evening lectures will kick off on September 19 with ‘Reaching For the Stars’ , which follows the varied career of space scientist Dr Maggie Aderin, from TV presenter to making instruments for the James Webb Space Telescope, and her continuing aspirations to make it into space. Bookings for this lecture are now open.
Future lectures in coming months will explore the origins and science behind the colour and patterns in animals and plants around the world, how scientists are planning to utilise the power of the stars as a future energy source for Earth, ask how successful people and computers are in recognising faces, how possible is time travel (and is Dr Who’s tardis really a wormhole?) and is our universe unique?
Lectures are lively and interactive, particularly ‘Exploding Custard’ that is packed with a number of light-hearted DIY kitchen table experiments that any budding scientists, young or old, will love.
Tony Buckley, Head of Communications and Outreach at Daresbury Laboratory, said: “From understanding the link between maths and juggling, exploring whether our universe is part of a much larger multiverse, to discovering what happens when Einstein meets Hendrix, these lectures will all demonstrate how science plays a vital part in every aspect of our lives.
Daresbury Laboratory’s ‘Talking Science’ programme aims to keep people both intrigued and in touch with all areas of science. Every lecture from last year’s ‘Talking science’ programme was fully booked and we have already received requests about this year’s programme of lectures, which contains something for everyone.”
The ‘Talking Science’ series of public lectures is open to everyone. Tickets are free but must be booked in advance by calling 01925 603040 or by email to [email protected]
‘Talking Science’ supports the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s (STFC) ‘Science in Society’ programme, which aims to inform and enthuse the public and people of all ages about science and technology.
