Rocker gets in tune with the law

A BUDDING rock star turned his back on the bright lights of showbiz to work as a wills and probate solicitor with a Warrington legal practice.
Lawyer Stephen Carruthers, 32, has just qualified with Forshaws Davies Ridgeway.
He played with his band Dive at various venues across Britain and had attracted interest from a number of record labels. But after playing a gig at The Garage in London the band decided to split.
He said: “There was a fall out between two of the guys and it was time to call it a day. I sometimes wonder what would have happened if we had stayed together. But I don’t really miss it. Music will always be there, but it’s only a hobby now.”
Stephen, who still plays the guitar and piano, attended the college of Law in York before joining Davies Ridgway Solicitors in Warrington two years ago. In July the company joined forces with Forshaws, to create the new firm.
He works in the wills and probate department and is championing better state support for elderly people.
“The current care system needs reform. We have an aging population and people are living longer,” he said.
“In addition, the younger generation aren’t starting families until much later. Local authorities are increasingly stretched and I see a lot of people struggling, trying act in the best interests of their elderly relatives.”
He said people need to consider their finances carefully as they may not be able to rely on the state in the future for long-term care.
Stephen said he does not miss the “rock and roll” lifestyle.
He said: “I enjoy meeting with the clients and being able to help people out with wills and powers of attorney – they’re generally quite appreciative of what I do, which wasn’t always the case with the music.”
