Pupils to help preserve ancient tradition

PRIMARY school pupils are to help maintain a tradition dating back more than 2,000 years in the Warrington area.
Beating the Bounds is an ancient custom dating from before maps had been drawn to protect the line of a parish boundary.
People would walk the route carrying willow wands and at the edge of the parish they would

beat stone posts with the wands to mark the boundary.
The Ramblers’ Association is trying to use the old tradition to organise local walks to promote rambling – and “have a bit of fun.”
A walk will take place on Thursday, September 25 taking in the parishes of Winwick, Croft and Culcheth – and local residents are being invited to take part.
Pupils from Culcheth Primary School will take part in the first stage, from Winwick Parish Church to Newchurch, Culcheth.
The complete walk, from Winwick to Culcheth and back, via Christ Church, Croft, covers 10 miles.
Packed lunches are required and the idea is to have lunch at Culcheth and afternoon tea at Croft.
All three churches will be open so that walker can visit them on the journey. And anyone who finds the walk too much will be able to take a bus back at whatever stage they choose.
The walk will start from the car park at Winwick Church at 11am.
