STUDENTS in Warrington have been celebrating achieving possibly some of the best A-Level results ever seen in the town.
Early returns from schools and colleges suggest that performance this year is better than ever with around 1,300 pupils completing advanced courses this summer.
Last summer, the average score per pupil in Warrington schools was 747 points, but provisional results suggest this year’s average will be at least 750.
Delighted students from Priestley College celebrated achieving a 99 per cent pass rate.
In total, 70 per cent of students at the Loushers Lane college achieved the coveted A to C grades.
One student in particular, Megan Tyler, attained one of the top five marks in the country for her biology A-Level.
Principal Mike Southworth commented: “Once again our students have done us proud. I am delighted that whilst continuing to provide opportunities for an ever increasing number of students we have been able to maintain our outstanding pass rates.
“It’s always an exciting time at college as we see students getting the results that will enable them to take up their university places or move into the job market. I’m particularly pleased that all of our students holding down offers for Cambridge got the grades they required.
“My congratulations go to all the students who have worked so hard and to everyone who helped them achieve their goals.”
Pupils across Warrington are now able to choose from a wide range of post-16 subjects including traditional A-Levels and national diplomas.
Around 20 per cent of the papers taken this year were in the newer vocational subjects.
The borough council’s executive member for Children’s Services, Coun Shelia Woodyatt, said: “The greater range of subjects now available at advanced level does seem to be encouraging more pupils to stay in full time education after the age of 16. I would like to congratulate all students and staff for their hard work in achieving such good results.”
The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) produces Performance Tables for advanced level results in mid-November. These can be obtained from the DCSF by phoning 0800 24 23 22 or direct from their website http://www.dcsf.gov.uk/performancetables/
