A SPECIAL memorial service to celebrate the life of murder victim Garry Newlove is to be held tonight (Saturday) – 12 months on from his tragic death.
His widow, Helen and daughters Zoe, aged 19, Danielle, aged 16 and Amy, aged 13, will attend the service at Christ Church, Padgate.
Other members of the family, friends and members of the local community will also attend the 7pm service.
Afterwards, a candlelit procession is planned to Station Road North to the spot where Mr Newlove suffered the injuries which led to his death, two days later, in hospital.
Mr Newlove had run, barefoot, from his home to confront a gang of drunken hooligans who were vandalising cars and other property in the area.
He was attacked, punched and kicked and left with devastating injuries.
Subsequently three youths were jailed for his murder, Stephen Sorton, 17, Adam Swellings, 19 and Jordan Cunliffe, 16.
Two, Swellings and Sorton, lodged appeals. No date has yet been set for the hearings but Swellings is appealing against both sentence and conviction while Sorton is appealing only against sentence.
At the end of tonight’s service, a recording of “Candle in the Wind” is to be played in the church and candles will be distributed to those taking part in the procession.
