Last gasp heart break for Wolves – again!

WARRINGTON Wolves suffered more last gasp heart break as St Helens snatched a last gasp 17-16 drop-goal victory thanks to the deadly boot of Sean Long.
After grabbing yet another dramatic victory for the Saints the cheeky half-back confessed after the match that he believed Warrington had been the better team and deserved to win.
But it was not to be as Saints continued their hoodo over the Wolves who have not won at Knowsley Road in the Super League era.
With just five minutes left on the clock Warrington, who had been outstanding, led 10-16 thanks to some awesome defensive work.
But Lee Gilmour managed to bounce over with the clock ticking away, which Long goaled to level the scores.
Lee Briers, who came off after 30 minutes with a stomach muscle injury returned for the closing stages and sliced a long distance drop goal effort wide but his good off-field friend put a dagger through the Warrington hearts yet again.
Saints looked to be running way with the game in the opening stages as they led 10-0 thanks to tries from Keiron Cunningham who tunneled his way over, with Long adding the extras and then Ade Gardner went over for his 24th try of the season and his 12th consecutive score against Warrington.
But back came Warrington with centre Matt King going over and Chris Hicks adding the two and then just before the break, a fantastic move, involving the ball sweeping across the field through six pairs of hands saw young winger Chris Riley slide in at the corner. Hicks’ conversion drifted just wide to leave the scores locked 10-10 at the break.
In a tight second half Warrington missed a couple of chances but on 61 minutes good work by Martin Gleeson set Simon Grix into the clear, with the young loose forward sending the supporting Riley over by the post for another outstanding try.
Warrington looked like they were going to hang on as they continued to tackle Saints into the ground but then up popped Gilmour, followed by the deadly boot of Long.
After the match Head Coach James Lowes said he was “extremely proud of the boys” and felt Warrington had deserved to win.
But the history books will again show more Warrington heart break!
