Police crackdown on mini-motorbikes

POLICE are cracking down on mini motorbike users in Warrington by seizing machines and issuing warning notices.

During the past few months, officers from the Warrington West NPU have seized eight bikes in total, issuing 10 notices to owners about their conduct on the bikes.
Officers say current hotspots for the nuisance bikes are Marina Park, Mary Ann Meadows and Sankey Valley Park.
PCSO Matt Kirkham said: “We understand that mini-motos are supposed to be fun and, when used in the correct place and ridden in the right way, this is not something we would challenge. But there are some people who insist on using the bikes in public places without the right documentation or protection.
“We have the power to seize vehicles that are used in a way which causes harassment, alarm or distress, even if the rider has tax and insurance.
“A warning is given first but if that fails to be effective and the vehicle is used in an anti-social manner again, it will be seized under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act. Vehicles can also be seized if the rider is not insured or has no road tax. If anyone is caught breaking the law rest assured that we will take positive action.”
Police now want to hear from residents who may have information as to where the bikes are being driven.
PCSO Kirkham added: “We are working closely with partner agencies and members of the public to gather as much information about the misuse of mini-motos and will use this information, where necessary, to support seizures and prosecutions.
“I am grateful to all those people who ring in to report the misuse of these bikes. It not only gives us the opportunity to respond but also to gather vital information about those who persist in using mini-motos in an inappropriate way.”
Anyone with any information about mini motorbikes is urged to contact the Warrington West Community Action Team on 0845 458 6385.
