Fuel prices could ground mercy flights

RISING fuel prices could cost Warrington residents more than a few extra pounds as one of the region’s emergency services is starting to feel the pinch.
North West Air Ambulance could be forced to shell out an extra £10,000 a year to stay in the skies if the current fuel price hike continues.
Last week the price of aircraft fuel went up by 16 per cent, meaning it now costs £7.20 a minute to keep the chopper, which covers the Warrington area, in the skies.
The air ambulance relies on the support of the general public to run the service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Charity chief executive Lynda Brislin said, “There’s absolutely no doubt that the sharp rise in fuel costs will place additional financial pressure on us when we already have to find £1.9 million a year to keep the air ambulance in operation.
“We will always respond to an emergency and be there if someone needs us, but we’re asking people not to forget we are a charity and rely entirely on donations from the general public.”
The helicopter is equipped with life saving drugs, defibrillators, qualified paramedics, intubation and advanced life support.
