Search for new young citizen

THE search is on again for Warrington’s Young Citizen of the Year – an unsung hero who goes the extra mile for their neighbour, school or town.
Mayor Coun Graham Welborn is to continue with the award this year following the success of last year’s inaugural competition.
Last year, Will Judge (pictured), from Sir Thomas Boteler CE High School, who was nominated for his dedication and involvement in school activities, was named as winner by the then Mayor, Coun Celia Jordan.
Now Coun Welborn is anxious to continue an awards scheme which recognises the valuable contributions to society made by young people.
He said: “It is important that we continue to recognise the valuable contribution that young people in the borough make to society through volunteering their time to assisting others, in particular an elder member of the community.”
As before, there will be a “Young Citizen” award made each month, with the eventual winner being chosen from those selected monthly.
The Mayor will be looking for young people who:
1. Fundraises for charity.
2. Takes part in a buddy scheme – helping peers or younger children with their reading.
3. Takes part in voluntary activities or goes out of their way to help.
4. Or is just an asset to some person or organisation and brightens up the day with the little things they do.
The awards are open to any young person between the ages of seven and 18 and nominations are welcomed from schools, colleges, members of the public, family, friends, youth groups or any other organisations.
The Mayor will present awards for the ‘Young Citizen of the Month’ and all monthly winners will be entered into the running for the grand final, Warrington’s ‘Young Citizen of the Year’ award next May.
This year the monthly winner will receive a visit from the Mayor and Mayoress to present the award to either their school or organisation depending on the reason for nomination. The finale will be held at the Town Hall and monthly winners will get a tour of the Town Hall before the presentation.
Further details are available online at www.warrington.gov.uk/councilanddemocracy and an application form can be downloaded. Alternatively, forms can be requested from the Civic Office, Town Hall, Sankey Street, Warrington WA1 1UH or by emailing Julia Pickering, Civic Officer, at [email protected]. The closing date for applications for the monthly awards is by midday on the first Friday of each month, and the award winner will be announced during the month.
