A NEW basketball academy has been officially launched at a Warrington college.
Warrington Collegiate, which runs football and Rugby League academies, announced the news at an international basketball event at Great Sankey Leisure Centre.
The new academy has received full backing from James Hamilton, captain of basketball side BiG Storage Cheshire Jets, who have junior teams based at Birchwood and Great Sankey.
He said: “It’s really encouraging to see so many young people taking an interest in sport and particularly in basketball.
“The pilot scheme was a great success and I am pleased to see the Collegiate maintaining its commitment to basketball in the town.
“As a pro team we will be playing four BBL games in Warrington in the 08/09 season and look forward to continuing to expand our community programme.”
Director of Sport at the Collegiate, Mike Stoddart, hopes the academy will encourage school leavers who are interested in the sport to take it forward into further education.
He said: “After the success of our football and rugby league academies we have seen that students are far more motivated to continue with education when they can pursue their passion for sports alongside it.
“The partnership between the Collegiate and Cheshire Jets is one that we hope will continue to grow and we’re delighted that our basketball development centre will begin in September.”
BiG Storage Cheshire Jets play in the British Basketball League (BBL), the sport’s equivalent of the Premiership.

  1. Good day,

My name is Funke Durojaiye, 18yrs old female from Lagos, Nigeria.. I am a 6ft basketball player and I am interested in joining your academy.. I am a high school graduate of 2004 but due to financial reasons, I couldn’t further my education. I am a very talented and skilled basketball player and i am looking for a place to showcase my talent.. I play as a shooting guard, a very good 3-pt shooter and also plays good defense… I was browsing online when I came acrosss your website and decided to contact you in other to ask for your assistance in realizing my dreams, goals and aspirations as a professional basketball player.. As they say “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a STEP”. I would really appreciate if you could assist me and it would bring so much joy to my soul… I’ve searched and contacted so many but never got a respond, probably because I live faraway.. I want to apply for a UK visa but unfortunately for me, I do not have a place to go, all i want to do is to take a step… I would really appreciate if you would look into my case and render your assistance like I am hoping you would..

Would be looking forward to your reply and I hope it’s a favourable one.

    Thank you

    Funke Durojaiye (Miss)
