Rain dilutes promotion challenge

RAIN again washed out much of the weekend’s cricket including Grappenhall’s game at Stockport Georgians – vital if the Broad Lane outfit is to continue its promotion challenge in the Right Move Abroad Cheshire County League.
Earlier in the week Grappers had exited from the Twenty20 Cup at the hands of Bowdon, so promotion to the first division is now the main target for the club to aim for.
The 2nd XI managed to complete a reduced overs game against current leaders Macclesfield but were let down by poor fielding.
Asked to bat first, Grappenhall got off to a poor start but thanks to opener Adam Roylance’s fine 68, 41 from Mike Holden and a useful 20 from Dean Langhorn, recovered to be able to declared on 186-7.
Sam Guest bowled well to take 4-54 but poor fielding let Grappenhall down and the visitors reached their target with five balls to spare when in reality they should have been 30 runs short.
Grappenhall 3rd XI decided to bowl first at Timperley on a wicket that had been left uncovered all week.
The home side posted 179 all out in 49 overs, Jack Critchley 4-28 and Paul Tyerman, 3-53 being the main wicket-takers.
Grappenhall’s target was always going to be difficult on a slow pitch and only 41 overs available but the aim from the start was to go for a win.
When the first wicket fell in the 14th over the score was only 30, however and despite a good innings from Sam Baxter and Bradley Angel also hitting 38, Grappenhall ended on 122-6, earning them 10 points to Timperley’s 8.
In the Cheshire Alliance, Appleton were dismissed for a modest 146 against Aston, with Tom Lomas, 54 and Chris Grumley, 34 not out, the main contributors. Aston took the game with 149-4.
Appleton 2nd won by two wickets in the “derby” game with Glazebury 2nd.
Glazebury batted first and were dismissed for 147, Rhys Marsh top scoring with 44 , Wayne Hargreaves hitting 29 and Simon Green 21. Appleton replied with 148-8, Andy Peters hitting 33, Stuart Macgregor 24 and Paul Charlton taking 4-34.
Appleton 3rd beat Holmes Chapel by 50 runs after declaring on 176-9. Matt Lovell, 42 and Andrew Thorley, 29 were the main run scorers. Holmes Chapel were dismissed for 126, Roger Cawthorne taking 4-35.
Appleton 4th also had a useful win, dismissing Audlem 2nd for 45 after batting first and scoring 138, John Ormson 34. Michael Cumberland with 6-25 was Appleton’s most effective bowler.
Rylands 2nd won by five wickets against Frodsham, who were held to 175-8. Rylands replied with 176-5.
